Mary J. Leen completed an artist residency program working on a series of oil paintings. Culminating in a solo exhibition in CoGalleries in Berlin Mitte Germany on the 10th of July 2019
The exhibition was titled ‘Whispers from the Light‘
About the work:
Inspired by the writing of Victor Frankl and the tragic death of his wife Tilly on the famous ‘Night of Broken Glass’ in Berlin. The artist imagines a world where Tilly still exists. An alternative world / stained glass matrix where where she is half woman half glass. This merging with her fantastical world presents a rich visual narrative for Mary to explore.
There is an obvious symbiosis is this exploration between this dream like world of Tilly and the world of the artist in her art work in stained glass. The work is multidimensional and imbued with rich emotion and subtle energy. In the eternal search for self, her process involves connecting energetically with her subjects of study. Imagining their inner world, how they thought and felt. A narrative with a unique merging of fact and fiction emerges through this imaginative process. She strives to reference the inner riches that she can imagine within her subject and their environment. By creating and by capturing this essence she is attempting to upgrade her own psyche and to gift her subjects a form of immortality.
In essence her thought process is formulaic, Connection + expression = Freedom.
